Grants for Children’s Health Programs

It’s never too soon to begin working on grant proposals.  The foundations below are especially interested in programs that have an impact on children’s health.  Although the deadlines may be several months away, if you’re interested in applying, don’t procrastinate!  Begin collecting information and identifying partners today.

The WellPoint Foundation focuses on initiatives that improve community health by reducing the number of uninsured Americans and improving specific health outcomes.  They seek to improve community health by supporting programs that have a positive, measurable impact on health conditions.  They are interested in a variety of program proposals, including those that will:

  • Increase prenatal care in the first trimester
  • Reduce the number of low birth-weight babies
  • Reduce childhood obesity
  • Decrease the prevalence of diabetes

The next quarterly proposal deadline is May 9.

The American Academy of Pediatrics sponsors the Community Access to Child Health (CATCH) Planning Funds Program, providing grants to pediatricians to develop community-based initiatives that increase children’s access to medical homes or to specific health services not otherwise available in the community.  The CATCH website has several tools and guides to help with proposal preparation.  They will even provide feedback if you send them a brief outline of your program idea.  The grant amounts aren’t huge ($2,500 to $12,000), but this is a great opportunity to partner with a provider in your community to improve health care access.  The application deadline is July 31.

UnitedHealthcare Children’s Foundation Medical Assistance Grants provide assistance to individual families for children’s medical services not fully covered by their health insurance.  Annual grants up to $5,000 can be used for a wide variety of expenses, including co-payments, physical therapy, psychotherapy, medical equipment such as wheelchairs, hearing aids, and eyeglasses, and, in some cases, orthodontia and dental care.  There is no application deadline for this program.
