Resources for Oral Healthcare

Rural children’s oral health and care is worse than their urban peers by almost all measures, according to a report published last fall.  The authors of ”Dental Health and Access to Care among Rural Children” found that, compared to urban children, rural kids were less likely to have seen a dentist in the previous year, have dental insurance, or have “excellent” teeth, according to their parents.   You can view the executive summary online or request a paper or electronic version of the complete report.  The South Carolina Rural Health Research Center publishes a number of reports on various topics throughout the year, all free.

The Children’s Health Alliance of Wisconsin will host an educational event, Improving the Oral Health of CYSHCN: A Team Approach, April 17 at North Central Technical College in Wausau.  According to the Alliance, dental health care is the largest unmet health need for Wisconsin children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN).  This event will increase the knowledge of oral health providers treating CYSHCN.  It is recommended for dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, dental business staff and students of dental-related programs.  For further information, contact Diane Flanagan at (414) 292-4015.

The Wisconsin Dental Association’s Foundation sponsors grants that provide dental care to underserved populations.  The will consider proposals up to $10,000.  Eligible activities include purchasing supplies for low-income dental clinics and dental health education.  The application deadline is August 31.

Oral Health America sponsors the National Sealant Alliance.  The Alliance has a goal of providing dental sealants to 225,000 children by 2010.  You can request free dental sealant material for your school-based oral health program by completing the online form.  There is no application deadline.
