Rural Healthcare Summit, EMS Grants… and a Game!
The Office of Rural Health will host the Rural Health Summit April 22 in Wisconsin Dells. We expect over 100 rural health stakeholders to attend, including representatives from hospitals, clinics, EMS, public and oral health and state legislators. This is an opportunity to help us identify key issues in rural health and what can be done to address them. Registration is free, but seating is limited.
Here are a few grants and awards I encourage you to consider applying for:
-
The National Emergency Medicine Association considers proposals to their grant program four times a year. They look for proposals that reach a broad segment of the community and improve emergency response systems. Previous grants have been used to purchase ambulances and for CPR training and education campaigns. The next proposal deadline is May 15.
-
FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) guidelines haven’t been released yet, but you should regularly check for them on their website. This is a large grant program that awards thousands of grants, including 185 in Wisconsin earlier this year. Grants can be used for equipment, vehicles, training and facilities for fire and other emergency departments. The website includes tools to help with grant writing and management.
-
EMS1 sponsors the Excellence in EMS Award contest. They’re looking for a story, tribute or essay no longer than 750 words that exemplifies the award theme, A Proud Partner in Your Community. The winner will receive a $200 gift card. The deadline is April 20.
I haven’t looked at this product, but I thought I’d pass along the information because it sounds interesting. George Washington University Medical Center has developed Zero Hour: America’s Medic, “a single player point of view serious game designed to allow you the opportunity to build on and apply your skills as a medical first responder within a virtual environment.” There’s a $14.95 charge to download the game.
The WI State EMS Section is holding a series of Town Hall meetings this spring to get comments and feed back on proposed administrative rule changes affecting EMS. The proposed changes will be here (the site says to “Check Back-Coming Soon”) and the meeting schedule is here. I urge you to attend a meeting near you and provide input and comments. Twelve meetings are schedule April through June throughout the state, all from 6:00 – 9:00.
