Grants, Conferences and Training Opportunities
As I’ve mentioned before, sometimes I discover opportunities kind of at the last minute. Here are some funding and other resources I encourage you to look into:
Â
A new organization, the Healthy Classrooms Foundation, is working with communities in Dane County to bring public health education into the classroom to help students make smart decisions about nutrition, fitness, and environmental responsibility. They sponsor two programs; they’ll award grants up to $2,000 to programs that integrate public health into the primary and secondary classroom and they will also award up to $1,000 scholarships for individuals to attend a conference or other learning event and share information with the community. The application deadline is May 26.
Â
The WI Public Health Association’s annual conference is in Appleton May 5-7. The theme this year is “Policy Development and Partnerships: The Foundation for Improving the Public’s Health.â€Â Session topics include how to educate legislators about policy implications and the current state system of care for pandemic flu patients.
Â
May 14 & 15 in Madison, the WI Asthma Coalition will hold their spring meeting. This will be opportunity to talk with state legislators about smoke free WI initiatives and celebrate the release of the 2009-14 WI Asthma Plan. There will also be legislative updates and educational sessions.
Â
I just learned about an online grant proposal writing course offered by Fort Hays State University in Hays, KS. The eight week course requires no travel and offers opportunities to interact with the instructor and other students. I’m not familiar with the course, but it looks pretty comprehensive. From the student comments, it appears that a number of people working in health care have taken the course. Those who complete the course receive a certificate and continuing education units. If you do enroll, let me know what you think. Classes begin May 11.
