Growing and Supporting Community Leaders
When it comes to developing community leaders, the grow your own approach is vital. There are resources out there for you and others in your community to gain knowledge and experience in community development and leadership and to recognize their accomplishments.

Wisconsin Rural Partners recognizes community leaders with their Wisconsin Community Leadership Award. The award recognizes individuals and organizations that “have made significant and notable contributions to a Wisconsin community, or region, in a manner that exemplifies leadership and community service values.â€Â Nominate someone in your community who you think has made a contribution. Nominations close May 1.

DoSomething.org sponsors Do Something grants, $500 awards to young people who are active in programs or organization in their communities. You must be under 25 to be eligible. One award is given every week; there is no application deadline.

The Centers for Disease Control sponsors the National Public Health Leadership Institute at the University of North Carolina. This ten month program is conducted primarily on line, with two one-week in person sessions. The Institute’s goal is to “support the public health leaders who will help lead the change in the public health system for years to come.â€Â Applications are due each year in January and classes begin in February.

I’m heading out this afternoon to the WI Rural Health Summit, which the Office of Rural Health is hosting tomorrow, April 22, at the Kalahari Resort in WI Dells. I’ll have a lot to report when I get back.
