EMS Week and Grants
In honor of EMS week (May 17-23) on May 23 from 10:00 to 1:00 the Hazel Green Area Rescue Squad and Fire Department is holding an Emergency Services Fair at their headquarters, 3940 North Percival Street, Hazel Green. Activities include tornado/fire trailer and K-9 unit demonstrations, rides on a Model A fire truck and a visit from McGruff the Crime Dog. You can post your community’s EMS week activities in a comment below, or send me an email at kmjacobson2@wisc.edu .Â

Here a couple grant and funding opportunities:

-
According to Project Ignition, car accidents are the number one cause of teen deaths. The National Youth Leadership Council and State Farm Insurance invite teams of high school students, teachers, and community leaders to create service-learning programs that promote teen driver safety.  They’ll award ten $5,000 grants for innovative proposals. This is a great opportunity for EMS to partner with schools on driver safety programs. Proposals are due June 30.

I know I’ve mentioned the USDA Community Facilities Program in previous posts, but it bears repeating. It’s a combination loan/grant program (grants are more often available for smaller, low income communities). Funds can be used for health and public safety construction and equipment purchases (fire trucks, ambulances, etc.).  Contact your local USDA office for more information. This program funds many different community projects, including senior and community centers, libraries, parks, etc.
