Resources for Native American Health

The Association of American Indian Physicians will host its 38th Annual Meeting and National Health Conference July 22- 26 in Alexandria, VA.  The  Conference theme is Critical Issues in Indian Health: Science & Solutions for the Health of Our People.  During the conference the Association will sponsor a two day pre-admission workshop for Native American students interested in applying to medical school.  They offer scholarships, including airfare and lodging.  Apply by June 15.

The AAIP has also published the American Indian/Alaska Native Diabetes Resource Guide for Health Professionals.  According to the Guide, over 16% of Native adults have diabetes and 30% are diagnosed with pre-diabetes.  I have a copy of this Guide on my shelf-it’s very comprehensive.  You can download the Guide or order it on CD.

The federal Department of Education will provide grants for Vocational Rehabilitation Services Projects for American Indians with Disabilities.   The Department anticipates the five year grants will average $380,000.  Governing bodies of federal and state reservations are eligible to apply.  Proposals are due July 23.

The Indian Health Service sponsors the Diabetes Education in Tribal Schools curriculum.  The comprehensive curriculum “includes K–12 multidisciplinary units with lessons that are designed to enhance the understanding and appreciation of the problems of diabetes in American Indian and Alaska Native communities, to empower students to make healthy lifestyle choices, and to stimulate general student interest in diabetes-based science careers.  The curriculum is based on national education standards for the respective subject area, along with Native American cultural content.â€Â  You can order or download the material online.
