More Safety Resources

There are several weeks and days in September dedicated to safety.  (I wonder who decides these things…)  I mentioned in my last post that September is Baby Safety Month.  I’ll continue the safety theme with some other resources.

The Office of Rural Health is co-sponsoring Wisconsin AgriSafe® Training in Marshfield November 12-14.   This course “is the first in Wisconsin to offer a core curriculum in agricultural medicine and health and safety.  It is designed to train rural health care providers for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of agricultural occupational illnesses and injuries.”  This is the first of a two part series, concluding March 18-20, 2010.

September 12 -18 is National Child Passenger Safety Week.  The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has developed an array of material to assist agencies in publicizing the importance of proper child restraint, including posters and public service announcements.  You can download all the information for free for this year, or start working on ideas for 2010.  The American Automobile Association (AAA) has compiled state regulations on child car seats and seat belts.  From their Exchange webpage select State Laws and the state you are interested in.

The National Education Center for Agricultural Safety has resources related to Farm Safety & Health Week (September 20-26).  The 2009 theme is “Rural Roadway Safety …. Alert, Aware & Alive.”  They have links to online, interactive training courses, such as Sharing the Road with Agricultural Equipment, tips on increasing agricultural vehicle visibility on the road and text you can use for radio public service announcements.

Finally, it’s not too early to start thinking about winter (I know, I know).  Safe Kids USA has tips on preventing winter sports injuries.  Over a quarter million children are injured each year while skiing, sledding and participating in other activities.  They also have a great listing of car seat check up events throughout the state between tomorrow (September 12, National Car Seat Check Saturday) and the end of the year.
