October Grants
I’ve been pretty busy lately and haven’t had a lot of time to post. I’ve been traveling around the state visiting with groups that we awarded our Community Grants. I’ve met some great people and heard about some very interesting projects. I’ll provide more details later (including pictures!). I want to let you know about these grants and awards while there’s still time to apply.Â
Â
The deadline for all of these is October 15—sorry about the short notice:
-
Do you know a dedicated rural physician? One who “demonstrates extraordinary dedication to patients and the community?â€Â Staff Care sponsors the Country Doctor of the Year Award, now in its 14th year. They are looking for nominations of doctors who practice in a community of fewer than 20,000 and who “demonstrate a commitment to improving healthcare delivery in the community and/or throughout the profession.â€Â The winner will receive a temporary replacement for two weeks (so they can take a vacation!) and recognition of their service.
-
Medtronic Foundation sponsors the HeartRescue Grant Program. They will award grants to increase awareness and education of sudden cardiac death, early defibrillation, and the need for early intervention among community leaders, first responder organizations and the public. They will not fund AED purchases. They will consider multi-year proposals.
-
Here’s a great opportunity to recognize a leader in health care in your community while securing a sizeable grant for their organization. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Community Health Leaders program will honor “outstanding and otherwise unrecognized individuals who overcome daunting odds to improve health and health care, especially to underserved populations in communities across the United States.â€Â The ten winners will each receive a personal award of $20,000 plus $105,000 to support their work.  Nominees must work with a public or non-profit organization.Â
Youth Service America will award $1,000 grants for service learning projects through the UnitedHealth HEROES program. Service-learning “is a teaching and learning strategy that combines meaningful service to the community with school-based curriculum or program-based learning.â€Â They will consider projects that focus on childhood obesity, engage youth ages 5-25 in the planning and implementation process, and take place next spring. The deadline is October 22.
Â
And a reminder about  Fire Prevention and Safety Grants from the Department of Homeland Security. These grant s can be used for a wide variety of projects, not only fire department equipment purchases. Recent grants were awarded for a child fire safety program, a community smoke detector and education program and a fire safety day event. The website includes tutorials and examples of prior awards. Proposals are due October 23.
