Diabetes Month Continued
It’s been a while since I posted; unfortunately H1N1 hit me! But I’m back with more diabetes education and prevention resources.Â
Â
Leading a healthy lifestyle, including physical activity, is important for diabetes management and prevention. Home Depot is awarding gift cards up to $2,500 through their Building Healthy Communities program. They will select proposals that will improve the “physical health of your neighborhood by planting trees, developing green spaces and updating school facilities and community centers.â€Â There are several deadlines throughout the year; the next is December 15.
Â
The American Diabetes Association recently unveiled a new website, Diabetes Act Now, in English and Spanish. This campaign “aims to raise awareness of the risks of uncontrolled diabetes and give adults with diabetes a place to get simple answers and take the first steps towards staying healthy.â€Â You’re able to access a number of tools and create a personal account to track your blood pressure, cholesterol and other indicators. You can sign up for email reminders and Twitter updates. There are a number of videos on healthy recipes, activities and other information.
Â
The National Diabetes Education Program also has a number of resources and publications to assist you and your community. The Program “translates the latest science and spreads the word that diabetes is serious, common, and costly, yet controllable and, for type 2, preventable.â€Â You can download or order dozens of publications, subscribe to their monthly e-newsletter, or listen to Managing Diabetes podcasts.
Â
The WI Department of Health Services Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity Prevention Program “provides statewide leadership to decrease overweight and obesity, increase physical activity and improve nutrition.â€Â One of the resources they’ve developed is the Active Community Environments (ACEs) Resource Kit. This includes an assessment tool to identify current and potential physical activity strategies in your community and guides on how to get started on improving activity resources.
