Education Loan Assistance Program Extended
The Wisconsin Health Professions Loan Assistance Program (LAP), which awards education loan repayment funds to certain health care providers working in shortage areas, will continue to accept applications past the November 2 deadline. The program, administered by the WI Office of Rural Health, awards up to $50,000 in assistance to eligible primary care physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners, and certified nurse midwives, dentists and dental hygienists who agree to practice for three years in a federally designated health professional shortage area (HPSA).Â
Â
The LAP is one of several programs that assist in recruiting and retaining providers in shortage areas, both rural and urban.  This year one of these programs, the National Health Service Corps, received a significant amount of additional funding in the federal stimulus programs. This resulted in more funds than there are current applicants for some programs, such as Wisconsin’s LAP. The Office of Rural Health decided to keep the program open until current funds are exhausted. The need for providers in shortage areas exists throughout the year and this valuable program will help to meet critical needs in communities across the State.Â
Â
The competitive program requires an online application and additional information (current loan balance, proof of education, etc.). More information is available on our website. You can also contact me, Kevin Jacobson, by email or at 608-261-1888 to learn more.
