Community and Economic Development Part I

The Office of Rural Health is committed to providing a “wealth of resources to healthcare and community organizations,” resources that enable communities to address both their health care and community and economic development needs.  We believe health care and development are related; improving one can lead to improvements in the other.  I’ve recently come across a number of grants and other resources related to community development.

The University of Wisconsin will host a Sustainable Communities Public Policy Forum March 25 & 26 in Menasha.  Participants will include community leaders, legislators, business representatives, faculty and students.  You will develop a better understanding of sustainability in relation to community development, share best practices and identify state and local policy needs.

Grants with March and April due date:

  • The Roads to Reading Initiative is committed to “provide quality reading materials to children in underserved communities in the United States.”  Their Competitive Book Donation Program donates books to small and rural community literacy programs.  You program must focus on remedial reading or tutoring to be eligible.  Applications are due March 30.
  • The American Academy of Dermatology’s Shade Structure Program will award grants up to $8,000 to communities for purchasing permanent shade structures.  The goal is to provide ultraviolet (UV) ray protection for outside areas.  You must be sponsored by a member of the Academy and have a sun safety/skin cancer awareness program.  You can search for local dermatologists on the website.  Past recipients seem to be mainly schools—this can be a great way to improve your local elementary school grounds.  Submit your online proposal by April 12.
  • The Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation’s NEXT Awards recognizes community development financial institutions that are doing innovative work in their communities providing capital and financial services that benefit low-income and low-wealth people, such as building homes, schools, small businesses, and community facilities.  Many past recipients have been rural institutions.  Submit applications by April 30.
