Poison Prevention and Safety

March 14-20 is Poison Prevention Week and the Poison Prevention Week Council has prepared a number of resources your organization—EMS, law enforcement, clinics, schools—can use to raise awareness of this safety issue.  Take a look around their site.  There are opportunities to order education material (free!), examples of PSAs, posters, etc.  Did you know you shouldn’t mix anything containing chlorine bleach, like some dishwasher soap, with any material containing ammonia, like some liquid dish soap?

This post is all about safety resources—funding, tools, and reports. (I hope some of you look at the reports I post about—they contain some great information, data and ideas for projects you could use in your community or your next program proposal.)

UW Health has an extensive video library of short presentations on health and safety topics.  This video includes some tips on how to shop for safe toys.  The idea of checking toys to see if they pass through a toilet paper tube is great.  There’s also information on an app you can use to check on toy safety while you’re shopping.

Last year the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center published a Case Study Compendium, a report describing dozens of the best pedestrian and bicycle safety programs.  The cases “are intended to provide ideas and spur thinking about potential activities communities can undertake to further support bicycling and walking.  Each case study provides a context in which the program or project takes place, a description of the pedestrian and/or bicycle issues faced, as well as how the community sought to address their concerns through various measures.”  See, these reports CAN be useful.

The University of Iowa offers an Agricultural Safety and Health Certificate Program through distance education.  The program “trains students to detect safety and illness hazards and to treat and prevent farm-related illnesses, injuries, and deaths.”  Although you can complete the six-course program off campus, they encourage students to take one of the courses on site.  It’s offered spring semester or during an intensive 5 day course.  This year it will be June 7-11.

The John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety and Quality Awards “recognize major achievements of individuals and organizations in improving patient safety and health care quality.”  You can nominate yourself or your own organization by April 12 for award consideration.

The Department of Interior is awarding grants up to $20,000 to rural and volunteer fire department that operate within or in the vicinity of DOI managed lands.  DOI lands include wildlife refuges, national parks, waterways and historic monuments.  The Rural Fire Assistance program will fund training, communications equipment, protective gear, etc.  Proposals are due April 30.  This is a federal grant, so allow plenty of time to complete your proposal.
