National Public Health Week
It’s National Public Health Week and the goal of the American Public Health Association for 2010 is: A Healthier America: One Community at a Time. The Wisconsin Public Health Association is holding their annual conference in Middleton May 25-27. The theme is Achieving Health Equity through Policy and Partnerships.Â
There are many grants out there for public health projects—diabetes education, wellness programming, and other areas. I know I’m not able to post about even a fraction of them. If you know of an interesting opportunity, let me know. The Wisconsin Women’s Health Foundation is offering mini-grants to programs that education pregnant women about the dangers of smoking and work to reduce their smoking. Proposals for the First Breath program are due May 28.
The Kresge Foundation’s Healthy Environments supports programs that improve the health outcomes of vulnerable children and their families.  Funding priorities are clean air, safe and healthy housing and schools, and safe, accessible, and inviting outdoor play spaces. No deadlines. They fund multi-year projects and one year strategic planning grants.  Â
3M Corporation supports community programs in a variety of categories through their Community Giving program, including prevention and projects that build healthier communities. The accept applications on an ongoing basis, but only from communities where they have a facility or office. There are a few in Wisconsin; you can see them here.
Walgreen’s Community Grant Program awards funding to projects that increase access to health and wellness and for emergency and disaster relief.  There’s no deadline for the online application.
Here’s a great opportunity for those in public health, and other public service occupations, to get help paying off student loans. Participants in the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program will have their remaining school loan debt discharged after 10 years of full-time employment in public service.  The borrower must have made 120 payments in order to participate.
