Catching Up on Grants and Conferences

I usually write my posts around themes (EMS, oral health, etc.).  I think this is a good way to provide you with an array of resources on a particular topic, but sometimes there are opportunities that don’t fit neatly into a category.  So today I’m posting several funding and conference opportunities in a variety of areas—I didn’t want you to miss out on these.

May is Healthy Vision Month and the American Optometric Association has produced several resources you can use to inform and engage your community in practices to protect their vision, especially eye protection at work.  About 2,000 suffer work-related eye injuries every day.  Sight for Students provides free eye exams and glasses to low income, uninsured children.  Eligible children receive gift certificates through a variety of organizations, such as Head Start, to see a Vision Service Plan eye doctor.  There’s no deadline; contact one of the organizations listed on the website for a certificate.

The Wisconsin Asthma Coalition will hold its spring meeting in Eau Claire on May 7.  There will be interactive sessions and discussion of new asthma management technologies.  There is a networking reception/dinner the evening before.

The Wisconsin Oral Health Coalition is holding a series of meetings this spring throughout the state.  The Success, Gaps and Resources sessions are opportunities to learn about successful programs that have improved access to oral health care and a forum to collaborate on a regional basis.  There are meetings May 11 in Fennimore and June 3 in Minocqua.

The National Health Service Corps is rolling out a pilot program for half-time health care providers.  The Corps (like our WI Health Professions Loan Assistance Program) offers education loan repayment awards to providers who work in underserved areas.   The program was previously limited to full time physicians, dentists, NPs and others.  Applications are due May 25.

USDA Rural Development will accept applications through May 18 for the Distance Learning and Telemedicine Program.   The Program, a combination of grants and loans, is specifically designed to provide education, training and health care resources to rural communities.   You can use funds to purchase equipment and other technology.  Awards will range from $50k to $500k and there’s over $30 million available, so there will be a lot of awards.  This is a very “doable” application—you don’t need a complicated program proposal.  The Rural Assistance Center has a great description with more information.

Here’s an opportunity to recognize a health care provider for their excellent service and dedication.  Cherokee Uniforms sponsors the Inspired Comfort Award, which provides $1,000 grants to non-physicians working in health care who have “impacted the lives of others through exceptional service, sacrifice and innovation.”  In a communication from Cherokee, they said many rural providers would fit this description: “Braving dangers, extreme weather, driving excessive miles, bending over backwards to serve communities and underserved populations … all of these certainly could be viewed as exceptional!”  Submit your nominations by June 30.

Two federal funding opportunities target Native American communities.  The Indian Health Service’s Injury Prevention Program will award up to $80k to programs that target two priority areas: reducing motor vehicle injuries and fall prevention for seniors.  They plan to award 40 grants, so there’s a really good chance of receiving an award if you have a solid proposal.  Apply by May 28.  And the CDC is awarding up to $70k to programs that will reduce motor vehicle injuries.  They’re targeting strategies to reduce drunk driving and increase seat belt and child safety seat use.  Apply by June 17.  Applying for both of these grants would be a good leveraging strategy.
