Safety Month

June is National Safety Month; appropriate for the summer.  The National Safety Council has produced several dozen health and safety fact sheets on topics such as fireworks safety, home fire prevention and safe bicycling.  They have a whole series on agricultural safety.  There are some great ideas here to develop a community safety campaign.  There [...]

Rural Community Grants

I just released the guidelines for the 2010-11 Office of Rural Health Community Grants.  We’re awarding grants up to $15,000 to coalitions working on health issues in rural Wisconsin communities.  This year we’re awarding extra points to EMS-related projects.  Your coalition must include a rural hospital with fewer than 50 beds as an active member [...]

EMS Week in Wisconsin

EMS Week (May 16-22) is an opportunity for Services to focus on getting out health and safety messages to their community and to recognize and honor those who dedicate a significant portion of their lives to helping their community.  I’ve asked some of our rural services here in Wisconsin to share news about their EMS [...]

Safe Kids Week

Every month, week and day is a celebration of something—some of them are silly (did you know April is Fresh Florida Tomatoes Month?) but many of them are legitimate efforts to bring recognition to a serious issue.  You can find a lot of them here.  I try to write some of my posts around themes, [...]

EMS, Safety and Disaster Preparedness

I know there is a real need for financial and other resources in rural EMS, including workforce and training.  The Office of Rural Health strives to provide training and financial resources as much as we can.  I know many of you come here looking specifically for EMS information, so here are some grants and other [...]

Poison Prevention and Safety

March 14-20 is Poison Prevention Week and the Poison Prevention Week Council has prepared a number of resources your organization—EMS, law enforcement, clinics, schools—can use to raise awareness of this safety issue.  Take a look around their site.  There are opportunities to order education material (free!), examples of PSAs, posters, etc.  Did you know you [...]

All federal grants are officially announced on Grants.gov.  Here you can search for grant opportunities (there [...]

Emergency Services and Safety Grants

I haven’t posted on EMS for a while.  These opportunities aren’t directly related to EMS, but they may help your firefighting and first responders services.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is accepting proposals for Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grants through December 18.  SAFER funds are intended to “assist local fire departments [...]

October Grants

I’ve been pretty busy lately and haven’t had a lot of time to post.  I’ve been traveling around the state visiting with groups that we awarded our Community Grants.  I’ve met some great people and heard about some very interesting projects.  I’ll provide more details later (including pictures!).  I want to let you know about [...]
