New Physicians for Wisconsin Program (February 2010)
Since July 1 of 2009, the New Physicians for Wisconsin Program at the WORH has assisted 3 communities recruit new primary care physicians. These communities are: Waupun, West Bend, and Madison. In addition to these placements, we have had physicians interview in New Richmond, Milwaukee, Beloit, Kenosha, Green Bay, West Bend, Amery, Sauk City, St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin Rapids, Racine, Oregon, West Bend, and Osceola. We are hopeful that several of these interviews will end up in the placement of a new physician in the respective community. We also are diligently working with over 25 primary care (FP, IM, Ped) and specialty care (GS, OBG, ORS, Psych) physicians who have yet to interview with Wisconsin communities but we are hoping will be doing this in the next few months.
The New Physicians for Wisconsin Program currently has 103 family medicine, 52 internal medicine, and 8 pediatric medicine positions listed, as well as over 200 specialty physician positions. These positions are located in virtually every part of Wisconsin, in communities from 800 to 650,000 populations. Since the inception of the program in 1979, 126 communities in Wisconsin have received physician recruitment assistance (a total of 452 physicians). Our goal is to continually increase our efforts to assist Wisconsin communities with their physician recruitment needs, and thereby helping them provide the necessary medical care to the people who live here. We are hoping to assist many more communities with their physician recruitment through the remainder of the 2009-2010 recruitment “year”.

New Physicians for Wisconsin Program (November 2009)
The New Physicians for Wisconsin program was successful recently in assisting Dean/St. Mary’s ventures in hiring a 2nd family physician to their clinic in Waupun. The new provider will be providing primary care services to patients starting next month. The search for another family physician to this clinic in Waupun has been ongoing for several years, so we are thankful that a quality family physician has chosen to make the DSM clinic his “home”. Recruitment overall is more challenging than it’s ever been, as the number of primary care jobs increases and the supply of primary care physicians decreases. This is especially true for the rural communities of Wisconsin, and within this area even more so in the northern half of the state. Finding and attracting quality primary care physician is very, very difficult in the “northwoods” areas of the state. We continue to focus on these areas, and to get the word out as far and wide as we possibly can about all the wonderful opportunities available in communities anyone would be proud to make their home. We hope to have similar success similar for several of these northern communities and clinics like that we had recently in Waupun.

New Physicians for Wisconsin Program (October 2009)
The 2009-2010 recruitment “year” which began on July 1st, is proving to be a challenge like none before. The number of candidates we are sourcing is down from years past, likely due to the shortage in the number of primary care physicians available, and because of this the extreme competition between facilities and states for the services of those that are seeking employment. We always have and will continue to use every resource we can afford to attract physician to Wisconsin clinics and hospitals. Medical journal advertising, recruitment website advertising, mass mailings to physicians and also to residency programs, residency program presentations, and physician job fairs have all been utilized already and will continue to be throughout the coming year. The New Physicians for Wisconsin (NPW) program was successful in assisting a clinic in Wisconsin Rapids to hire another family physician recently, and we certainly hope that there will be many more success stories like this to come. Our commitment to Wisconsin clinics and hospitals remains steadfast, and we will strive more than we ever have to help bring new physician providers to our state. The task is a daunting one, but we remain confident NPW can have a positive influence in addressing the access issues we all face here in Wisconsin.

New Physicians for Wisconsin Program (September 2009)
The 2009-2010 recruitment “year” which began on July 1st, is now in full swing, and recruitment is as challenging as it’s ever been! The extreme shortage of providers as compared to the ever increasing demand has made recruitment difficult at best…..and in some cases nearly impossible. The New Physicians for Wisconsin Program (NPW) currently has roughly 160 primary care (FP, GIM, PED) positions listed as available here, with close to 100 in family medicine alone. Even larger cities where clinics and hospitals did not previously struggle to recruit are now facing difficulties. Rural communities have always had greater difficulty being successful with their recruitment efforts, and now that has become magnified. And this is especially true of rural communities in the northern half of the state.
We have increased our primary care sourcing efforts this “year” to include more internet physician recruitment sites, since indictors show physicians are increasingly directing their job searches to this medium. We still placed a few journal ads, but website advertising makes up the bulk of our sourcing currently. The main areas of focus this year are in family medicine, general internal medicine, pediatric medicine, general surgery, orthopedic surgery, and psychiatry. While NPW is able to assist physicians/clinics/hospitals in/with any medical specialty, our program has chosen to focus more effort than usual on these specialties. We always strive to promote physician jobs in Wisconsin as far and wide as we are able to, so as to reach as many physicians as possible who may desire to call Wisconsin their “home”. Special emphasis is always placed on rural community needs, and even more so those located in health professional shortage areas (HPSAs). Our goal as always is to assist as many Wisconsin clinics & hospitals as possible with their physician recruitment needs, as well as assisting as many physician as we can find the best “match” for them from both personal and professional perspectives. We hope our successes will serve to increase access to healthcare for the people of Wisconsin.

New Physicians for Wisconsin Program (July 2009)
America's Best Places to Practice
With primary care physicians in demand almost everywhere, there's not a region in the nation that wouldn't love to claim you as its own. The question is: Which state is best for your bank account, your career, and your peace of mind? Modern Medicine/Medical Economics Modern Medicine/Medical Economics has determined America's Best Places to Practice. Wisconsin Ranks Second!
Recruitment of Sites for Assignment of Corps Personnel Obligated Under the National Health Service Corps Scholarship Program
The Federal Register notice is about the increase in the threshold HPSA "score" for National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Scholarship physicians for the 2009-2010 cycle. The minimum "score" was increased from a 14 to a 17. This effectively reduces the number of eligible facilities here to roughly five community health center-type clinics: Appleton, Milwaukee (MHS), Wausau, Beloit, and Racine. Hospital and clinic-based positions in communities such as Sparta, Hayward, Spooner, and Shell Lake (to name some), are no longer eligible to recruit physicians who have a scholarship obligation to fulfill to the NHSC. This is very distressing news given that the rural communities here already struggle greatly to recruit new physicians, and now a potential group of physician candidates has been pretty much been eliminated for the coming year. Communities and facilities may well be served to submit new HPSA data to the State Dept. of Health Services and/or the Wisconsin Primary Care Association to make sure their "scores" are reflective of their actual need. It is possible that changes in the provider composition of a community/area, and/or population changes could increase a HPSA "score" to a level high enough to again be eligible for NHSC Scholarship physician to fulfill their obligations there.

New Physicians for Wisconsin Program (April 28, 2009)
The New Physicians for Wisconsin program is pleased to announce that “Physician Recruitment News, and Physician Recruitment Tips & Advice” will be two new features to our website. Each month, we will try and update you on the latest physician recruitment trends, newsworthy items, and/or offer tips & advice related directly to any/all aspects of physician recruitment. Please check our website monthly to see what’s new, and hopefully what can be helpful to you with your physician recruitment needs. Also, check out our recruitment Testimonial page.
This past month, the New Physicians for Wisconsin program successfully assisted Dean Health System in recruiting a new family physician to their clinic in Lancaster. Lancaster is a small community of 3,850 people located in the far southwestern area of the state (Grant county). The community has federal health professional shortage area status, which was critical in the recruitment of the new family physician as she has a National Health Service Corps scholarship obligation. The New Physician for Wisconsin program worked for many months with the recruitment staff at Dean Health Systems, who in turn worked with the Wisconsin Department of Health & Human Services to successfully make this placement happen. Programs such as the National Health Service Corps can be an invaluable resource to communities here in Wisconsin in regards to their recruitment of new healthcare professionals.
Also in the past month, we assisted the University Department of Family Medicine (UWDFM) in recruiting a new family physician to their clinic in Sun Prairie. This particular physician will be involved in both clinical and academic work for the department, and begin his duties in August of this year. Again, many months of work was involved with both the New Physicians for Wisconsin program and the physician recruitment “team” at the UWDFM. This brings our yearly total of successfully recruited physicians to nine, of which all are in the specialty of family medicine. It has been a very difficult year in regards to the overall number of successful recruits for the New Physicians for Wisconsin program, and we are planning on looking into new ways to try and increase the exposure of our program on a national basis in the coming recruitment year (7/2009-7/2010). There are hundreds of outstanding physician jobs available here in Wisconsin, and our “mission” is to see that we spread the word about these positions as far and wide as we possibly can.

New Physicians for Wisconsin Program (March 31, 2009)
Since starting a new recruitment “year” on July 1, 2008 the New Physician for Wisconsin Program has recruited seven physicians thus far to Wisconsin communities. All seven physicians are in family medicine. It’s been a very difficult year recruitment-wise. There are many more positions available than ever before, but the “pool” of physician candidates has not matched the increased number of positions available. The New Physician for Wisconsin program has over 115 positions listed in family medicine alone! Recruitment efforts to rural clinics and hospitals is much more difficult than it’s ever been, and many are resorting to recruitment strategies not previously used or even deemed necessary. Generation X and Y physicians have different needs and desires than those of years past, and being flexible to the changing wants and needs of these younger providers is the key to successful recruitment. Medical school debt repayment monies, larger signing bonuses, larger base salary guarantees, more flexible call schedules, changing requirements on obstetrical work (births), ER coverage requirements, and hospital in-patient responsibilities are several of the areas that may need to be addressed with as much flexibility as possible. It is critical in these times to have your recruitment “plan” updated and followed in a precise manner. This means everyone involved both within the health care environment and within the community/area environment must be “on the same page”. Any deviation could and will often mean a candidate will wind up elsewhere. The number of available positions is so immense these days that the dwindling “pool” of physician candidates can and do only select those that offer pretty much everything (or more!) that they are seeking in a medical position and in a community. The New Physicians for Wisconsin Program will look at various ways to improve its sourcing efforts in the coming years on behalf of Wisconsin clinics, hospitals, and healthcare systems. We will attempt to increase all of our sourcing avenues in ways that get the word out to as many potential physician candidates as we can about all the great physician job opportunities available in out state. My hope is that our increased efforts will mean more physicians being hired by clinics, hospitals, and healthcare systems statewide, and more access for your patients to quality health care services. We look forward to the challenge the coming years offer. Physician Placement Program (October 28, 2008)
Since starting a new recruitment “year” on July 1, the Physician Recruitment Program has recruited five physicians thus far to Wisconsin communities. These physicians will be practicing in the communities of Oshkosh (2), Milwaukee, Shawano and Mount Horeb. The Milwaukee position is with a community health center-type facility. All five physicians are in family medicine. Our Physician Recruitment Program has now assisted in recruiting a total of 445 physicians to Wisconsin since the program’s inception in 1979. The need for primary care physicians continues to be strong, as our program currently has 109 family medicine, 47 general internal medicine and 22 pediatric medicine positions available statewide. This year we have also chosen to concentrate our efforts to attract specialty physicians in orthopedic surgery, general surgery, psychiatry and Ob/Gyn. We have increased to a new level the amount of advertising we are doing in specialty journals and on internet physician recruitment websites, as well as conducting a mass-mailing of recruitment brochures to residency programs in 15+ states. This year promises to be more challenging than ever as the need for primary care and specialty care physicians increases, while the supply remains at levels well below what’s required. Our Physician Recruitment Program efforts on behalf of Wisconsin clinics, hospitals, and healthcare systems is one more way to increase your chances of successfully recruiting the providers your patient population requires. We look forward to the challenge this year offers.
