Rural Health & Your Communities
We received a great response to our call for rural health videos, and some really outstanding work is being highlighted in the communities below. Both healthcare and community health projects were the focus of the videos, with everything from commercials for local hospitals to healthy food systems. Our judges valued the entries from all parts of that spectrum, and the favorites below reflect that. One clear theme from the judging was that a strong community focus was key, as rural health is grounded in rural communities. Enjoy these wonderful glimpses into rural Wisconsin and their efforts to improve their health - for their neighbors and themselves.
First Place - Polk United
Inviting an entire community to the table to shape a vision for health.
(Amery) Local farmers come together with local retail, restaurants and residents to create healthy food options in the community and education on eating healthier. Neighbors helping each other to eat better, support local business, and strengthen community bonds.

Second Place - Upland Hills
Our community, our passion.
(Dodgeville) Rural patients discuss the care they receive at the nearby hospital and clinics. It's care from their neighbors, rooted in community values, providing high quality and necessary services to rural areas.

Third Place - Langlade Health Coalition
Proposing social connectedness as the path to solve complex health challenges.
(Antigo) A physician talks about practicing in a rural community, a dentist creates an outreach clinic in the local hospital to address emergent needs, and a coalition of food pantries come together to feed their neighbors in need and create healthier dietary choices.

Honorable Mention - Mike Nigl Story
(Richland Center) A man tells his story of growing up in rural Wisconsin, heading off to the military and living around the U.S., but returning to raise his family, start a business, and live in the country. When cancer struck, he went to the nearby hospital, and received care from his friends and neighbors. A moving portrait of the impact of a deadly disease on a rural family.

* A note on the prizes: We had originally planned to award first and second place in two categories, Amateur and Professional. While the amateur videos showed promise, unfortunately none were sufficient for an official award. Since four awards would no longer be given, we added a 'third place' award and honorable mention to the professional category.
