USDA Announces New Rules to Fund Broadband Service in Unserved Rural Areas

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced new rules to better target Community Connect broadband grants to areas where they are needed the most. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) remains focused on carrying out its mission, despite a time of significant budget uncertainty. Fishermen Age 50+ Encouraged To Take Part In A Survey On Fishing And Fish Consumption

Older men consume more sport-caught fish than other age groups according to studies by the Department of Health Services (DHS), and they could have higher levels of mercury or other contaminants commonly found in fish if they don’t follow fish advisory information. That is why DHS, along with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), is asking fishermen age 50 and over to take part in an online survey about where they fish, what fish they eat, and where they get their information on safe fish consumption.  (Source: WI DHS)  [Read article]


Garden Grants Sow Seeds Of Healthy Living

As students began settling into their classroom routines in October 2011, the seeds of something much bigger than a carrot or tomato were planted. With support from the Wisconsin Medical Society Foundation and its partners, 12 schools across the state were awarded grants ranging from $500 to $1,900 to establish or expand sustainable school gardens. Wisconsin Women’s Health Foundation: Receives grant from Susan G. Komen for the Cure Southeast Wisconsin affiliate

The grant from Komen Southeast Wisconsin will support the Kohl’s Southeast Wisconsin Breast Health Assistance Fund, a fund started 3 years ago to provide mammography and other diagnostic screenings for low income, uninsured and underinsured individuals.
